IMO, There is absolutely no need to remake a classic film such as this. It wasn't just the 50's vintage SFX that made the film; it was the unique chemistry achieved in casting. As far as I'm concerned, I'm of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school of thought. Remakes have been attempted over and over again and they never work like the original. PSYCHO was remade and it flopped. THE FOG was, too. Flop. WAR OF THE WORLDS... feh! JOURNEY...EARTH has been disasterously remade several times since 1959 and they were all dogs, too. Pretty much the only film which has been remade that didn't totally blow eggs was PJ's very good (but not perfect) KING KONG project.
Even with the incredible Ridley Scott at the helm, I shudder to even consider what will be done with the remake of ANDROMEDA STRAIN...
"Any technology sufficiently advanced would be indistinguishable from Magic."
I actually have no problem with remakes if they are well done. Now I haven't seen it yet but it doesn't look promising. I like Brendan Frazier, but putting with two kids and no one else and making it 3D says to me this should be straight to DVD and it isn't going to do well. To bad I actually wouldn't mind seeing a good remake. I absolutely love the original and so far none of the remakes can hold a candle to it.
