TCM showing (8-11-12)
Tuning into this movie on the TCM channel, I noticed its aspect ration - 1.78:1, which is wrong - and its picture quality - noticeably substandard.
So, I have a gripe for TCM: An old 16mm pan-and-scan, put on standard 480i video, then cropped and blown up to serve as a fake HD program! Do not show this print ever again. This movie was made in Cinemascope, and viewers prefer a 2.40:1 transfer from 35mm film to 1080p HD video, to see it closest to the way it was meant to be seen. If this format is available, or at least a good DVD letterbox, show it this way instead from now on, dear folks at TCM. Please present 20th Century Fox's Journey to the Center of the Earth as magnificently as your other classic fare, such as Around the World in 80 days, or Ben Hur (which was its only competition for the Oscar for Special Effects).
And a question for 20th Century Fox (or whoever owns the rights): Is this movie available on Blue-Ray? A resounding gripe if it's not. This is the best screen version of the Jules Verne novel, and it deserves to be restored and remastered for HD video so it can look and sound its best.
