I too was a fan of the duck. But, having pet ducks as a kid around the time this movie was first released, I have to reveal the worst spoiler of all for all you fans [stop reading now if you are a Gertrude groupie]... In at least half of its scenes, the duck was a drake in drag. This includes the first time HE opens his beak wide and vocalises, in the arms of Hans, on seeing Alec and the professor emerge covered in feathers. Or check out the moment near the end when he strides across the scene past Count Saknussem, uttering several authoritative slow "quaarcks" that no female duck ever managed. Maybe, as with Lassie the dog, the duck wrangler knew that males were more easily trained, or maybe there was a shortage of presentable females. Fortunately this was a forgivable goof, in one of my all-time favourite movies. My brother and I saw it twice in the same week, dragging along the whole family the second time!
