Annie's love

Sarah Jane must have been miserable. She didn't really fit in anywhere, and had to witness her mother's doting on Susie for years.
I never felt that same warmth from Annie to her own child, and would've turned my back on Annie as well.
I do find it rather touching that in the end, Sarah Jane proved she really loved her mother.

And she was continually pestering her to be black, when she was equally white and looked white.

I didn't want to mention that part, but have to agree. Sarah Jane could definitely "pass" as long as her mom let her live her own life. It's almost as if Annie were proud to have a white looking daughter, all the while trying to force Sarah Jane to embrace her blackness. Still a great film that I have on DVD, and always watch when it airs on tv.

No way would I agree that Annie deserved what Sara Jane did to her. Annie loved her. Plain and simple. Yes, she doted on Susie, as this was her job to keep a roof over their heads. Then they all became a family. Sara Jane was an angry child from the start, throwing a fit over the black doll. I get it, I really do, but her mother didnt warrant being abandoned in that manner.
