Sandra Dee

Does anyone else think that, aside from being supremely annoying, Sandra Dee is very strange looking in this film? Her enormous head, and particularly her face, is way, way out of proportion with the rest of her body, particularly her spindly little limbs.

Sandra has always been tiny. Her hairstyle (the poofy do's of the time) probably added to the illusion of a large head. I didn't get that impression, but I could see how someone could.

Sandra also struggled with eating disorders, especially anorexia, throughout most of her life. But I agree with andersensister that she was lovely and very appealing.

I've always enjoyed looking at her. In passing flashes she has the same quality that Julia Roberts had in her 20s - as much a young puppy or other soft, sweet baby animal as human. (They look nothing alike; it's that particular quality I'm talking about.)

Dee had a soft, almost doll-like beauty. Unthreatening, no sharp edges. Just pretty, pretty, pretty.

As to "supremely annoying" - well. ;) She was no great shakes as an actor, but I never thought she stunk up the place.

Sandra Dee was very pretty. Her performance in IMitation of Life is pretty simpering for most of her scenes, but that quality works given that no one takes her very seriously with the exception of the big hearted Annie. But I do think Dee rises to the occasion when she has the big face off with Lora and tells her mother to stop acting.

My favorite Sandra Dee movie has always been "If a Man answers" (with Bobby Darin).
She was also very good in "A Summer Place"!

I agree with you that Sandra Dee is very pretty and doll-like, but unfortunately I vehemently disagree about her having a Julia Roberts quality. Its just my opinion, but I find Julia Roberts very unattractive.

This thread is in poor taste considering Sandra Dee battled with eating disorders and psychological troubles from being molested as a child.

I don't think she was odd-looking at all; she was very cute and pretty. I did find the **character's** actions a little over the top, all gee-whiz and gushy, but that's how the part was written, no doubt. Sandra Dee had/has very big eyes, so combined with the "bubble cut" hairdo that was so popular in the '50s and '60s, they give her face a very rounded look in comparison to the rest of her.
