I have a theory that Judy Garland, Kathryn Grayson, Marilyn Monroe, Dinah Shore, Kay Francis, and Ava Gardner all passed for white, most likely along with a whole host of others. Anyone have any theories or know anyone else who did? I am doing a report for sociology! Thanks.
I've had people from Nigeria and Liberia laugh when I call myself black - they don't consider me black or other Black Americans truly black
That's interesting. I've never heard that. Why don't Africans consider black Americans black? As far as I'm concerned, we're just as black as they are, we were just born in a different country. Did they tell you why they felt that way?

Some Africans don't believe African Americans are "truly black" because of the race mixing that has gone since slaves were brought over. That's the reason some have given me anyhow. A lot of people from Africa don't mix races (some, not all of course) so, they consider anything mixed with that to be less than pure or not truly black. Again, that is just want some of them said to me. I can't account for every one of the Africans who think that as I'm sure some don't.
"I love this moment so much, I want to have sex with it"
^LOL what a laughable display of desperate straw-grasping. Aside from Ava and maybe Jolie, those women are as white looking as all out get, and it's only here where I've run into these theories about mixed-race. Marilyn Monroe now may have been part-black, LOL, get out of here. You guys aren't even targeting "exotic" whites anymore, it's apparently anything goes now.
You speak as though white people can't come in a variety of facial features, hair texture and hue variations even though other races evidentially can. By the way, the source of Ava's possible "coloring" is generally documented to be Amerindian, not black, and it's cited around 1/8 at best. Britney also has been suggested only having part-Amerindian blood...something by the way which was originally derived from no other source but her OWN MOUTH(killing the "passing" theory dead), back when she was 18 one day and apparently itching to hop the trendy of bandwagon of whites "exoticizing" themselves through identification with Amerindian roots they just so happen to have NOTHING to physically show for. As if such a possibility in any instance holds any significance when someone is so blatantly Caucasian appearing from top to down, that to believe they could suddenly relate to the experience of their newly identified race is...a bad joke at best.
Lastly,(and appropriately following) Jolie and co. already came out and confessed her Iroquois claims as having been fabricated in response to the fuss about her features. I cannot believe the things I read here.
I've never read different about Angelina having a very slight amount of Native ancestry and for Ava never read anything different of her being rumored having anything but a slight amount of black American ancestry....not native American. I read somewhere she mentioned that where her father grew up he was called white with a swipe of the tar brush or something like that.
I can see why Africans would not consider as "African" someone who has never even seen Africa. They probably think we're all rich, and not without reason; in America even the "poor" are rich by global standards.
Now, doesn't it make you feel silly to say that you are African American??? That is the point that Africans are making. I have Irish roots but I don't call myself Irish American. I am an American. Same as every other colored American. If you were born here or if you took the test and became a citizen, you are an American. Now, Drop the 'Titles" and let's all BE JUST AMERICANS!!!!
We didn't decide to up and call ourselves African American. That was the title given to us after *beep* negro/id, Afro American and colored became passe.
I agree that those born here who aren't 1st generation immigrants should just be called American. Unfortunately, that ain't the society anyone is living in.
My word is my *beep* bond! -I Love You Phillip Morris
The term "Afro-Americans" was thought up by black folks themselves---it was,for once, a name that white folks hadn't slapped on us---it's only been in use since the '80's. It wasn't just "given" to us, it was created with us in mind.
I haven't heard of the other actresses being light-skinned Blacks but I did hear Dinah Shore was part Black. Ava Gardner...hmmmm...I've always wondered but there's never been any evidence at all really. I also kinda wondered about Marilyn Monroe. Both me and my Mom who are light-skinned and Black, think she looked kind of Black when she was young and had her natural wavy brown hair out:
She looks like a LOT of fair Black girls I've seen in my life, in fact my hair is a lot like hers and I'm part Black http://360.yahoo.com/lavenderspirit2005
Of course, I could NEVER say for sure, I'm probably wrong.
Dinah Shore... I JUST found out she isn't black... LOL. And yeah, Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, and Errol Flynn always seemed a little black-looking to me.
Crystal CHappell was absolutely GORGEOUS as Carly Manning on DOOL. She's still beautiful. She had a wide mouth, thick lips, beautiful tan complexion, slanted eyes, and silky-like hair. I always wondered if she were Latin or part-black. One of my fav soap stars!
You are absolutely RIGHT! I agree with your assessment of Dinah Shore, Eva Gardner, Marilyn Monroe. I would venture to add Jayne Mansfieldand several B movie actresses. i.e. Pamela Duncan (Attack of the Giant Crabs)
Bringing it forward, I feel that Gerri Ryan (formerly of Boston Public) and others that fail to come to mind at present.
Wentworth Miller put a 21st century spin on the whole subject.
this is a really good topic i really do not think judy passed, if you look at olf photo's of her family they were white marilyn monroe i really think she was white but she was very exotic and different looking and viven leigh i really don't know, yes she was born in india so she has some indian blood in her blood
however ava gardener i think might have passed as white,
i wish that ppl. in this world were treated equally and maybe this mystery we call "passing" wouldn'y have to been used but i wish we new who did and who didn't now
while i disagree with passing, i do believe that it was probalby necissary to further their careers, there is no way that they would have gotten as far as they did if they didn't pass.
^ Why do you always seem to put your two cents in everything when it isn't needed? If you don't like the topic of the thread then don't post. It's that simple, SIMPLETON.
