As far as I'm concerned

Juanita Moore is the star of this movie. Lana Turner was beautiful and did a great job, and I'm not taking anything from her. But Ms. Moore breaks my heart and I've seen it dozens of times.

Juanita Moore's performance is what makes this film a classic. Heart wrenching.

If you haven't seen the 1934 version with Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers, check it out. It puts this 1959 remake to shame. Not only is it an all-around better movie, in terms of 'social consciousness' it's light years AHEAD of the later remake.
