If Annie had lived
I always thought it was particularly sad about Annie dying when she did because with the advance of the civil rights movement over the next few years that Sarah Jane would not have felt the need to continue to try to pass and deny her mother and they would have reconciled. If Annie had not felt like her days were numbered she would have more likely been content to let Sarah Jane do what she felt she had to do confident in the notion that changing times would make it unnecessary to keep up the charade. Considering the fact that the actress who played Annie only died last year there would have been more than 50 years ahead for Annie and Sarah Jane to enjoy a loving mother-daughter relationship. I guess the point was that we never know how much time we will have and it is best to right things as soon as we can, hence Annie's grueling travel across the country to say goodbye one last time to her daughter.
