sarah jane at the end...(SPOILERS)

i've noticed that some other people on this board have said that they think sarah jane was simply acting at her mother's funeral, and crying fake tears. i always thought she was completely for real and truly heartbroken, especially what with her reaction in the last scene she ever saw her mother.

what does everyone else think?

"Oh my God, what a horrible photograph. My first wanted poster and I look just awful."

reply

She was definitely NOT acting. My friend insists that Lora was acting when she screamed, "Annie! Annie! Nooo!" on Annie's death bed but I don't believe that. Anyways, Sarah Jane finally realized what she had given up.

reply

She was hurt and not acting. She realized her foolishness and will never have the mother she treated so wrong.

reply

I totally agree.
I have seen both this and the 1934 version several times and I always cry myself. I don't cry that much at movies anymore but this one always gets me.

reply

That part of the movie always make me cry and i hated Sarah Jane alittle bit.

This movie was so sad, but it really taught me something:

Never miss a chance to tell someone how much you love them because it may never come around again.

can we not include spoilers in the title threads please??

reply

I think you should watch a movie FIRST, before you look at a message board discussing the film. Then you will not see any spoilers.

reply

I wanted to find out what the movie was about for a class before I went, I just happend to scroll down the page and saw this title. thank you.

You're totally wrong. You can't include a *beep* spoiler in a title.

reply

Well said! I wish I would have realized it with my own Mother.....

reply

Exactly. That's what I learned however a part of me was sad for Sarah Jane and another part was angry that it took her mother to die for her to finally confess her true feelings.

reply

IMO she was truly distraught at her mother's death. Her angry look when she gets in the limo (I noticed it too) is anger at herself for acting the way she did.

This is actually very good acting on the part of Susan Kohner.

She was heartbroken. That part of the movie brought tears to my eyes.

Damn!!! My posts attract so many nutty B-A-S-T-A-R-D-S!

reply

I agree with you . I think that Sarah Jane was sincere in her crying scene at the back of the hearse. I wonder if Annie had lived a longer life if Sarah Jane would have ever accepted the fact that she(Sarah Jane) was really black, and learned to live with it ?

reply

Why would she bother to turn up and pretend to be upset?

Any wild and random suggestions like "Inheritance" or "a place to stay" are irrelevant considering it is at the end of the film where everything needs to be wrapped up.

As a narrative and resoultion, she feels sorry and upset at being so harsh to her mother.

If only Sarah Jane were brown-skinned, she would have probably treated her mother better, and Annie would never had the problems she had with Sarah Jane.

I get where your going but that shouldn't even be a issue. I know what time slot this movie was suppose to take place but still, it angers me very very much when I see something like this happens in a movie :(

We can DO IT ALLLL DAY LONG, (We'll have to pay more for the light bill if we do it at night!)

This scene is an absolute tear jerker in every sense of the word. I can't help but cry at the end.

reply

No, SJ wasn't acting at the funeral. Like many others have said, she realized what she did was wrong. I think that she always loved Annie, but her self hatred was stronger until she realized that it was too late.

reply

I think her scene is the one that gets me, Sarah Jane realizes that all those times, angry acts, mean words she could take back. The heartbreak that she will not have her mother to baby her, comfort her -love on her. It makes me upset and feel bad for when I was mean to my mother.

reply

Movies like this don't have women cry without it being real.

reply

I think she was crying for herself and for her mother. She realized how she had treated her mom and now regrets it while she grieves for her mom.

reply

I agree that she is truly sad and sorry. In the 'goodbye mamma' scene, it is clear that she loves her mother, and Annie knows it. She died knowing that Sara Jane loved her but hated her blackness.

That said, I'm sure there was a part of her that felt as if a weight had been lifted from her as well. I always wondered what happened after they got home from the funeral. If I were Laura, I'm not sure if I would have just sent her packing.

"What do you want me to do, draw a picture? Spell it out!"

I just rewatched this, when she gets in the limo at the end the look on her face when she looks out the window says it all>
Definitley acting! I seen this film more times than i can count and never noticed it before.
