The most BEAUTIFUL dresses and gowns I've ever seen in any movie...

Anyone agree?

The styles worn by the actresses today pale in comparison. Lana Turner was also a class act.

reply

Yes I agree! Was thinking the exact same thing while I am watching it right now, and then I came on here and saw your comment. Lana Turner looked stunning!

There was so much class and elegance in the styles worn back then..... I think I was born in the wrong era lol.

You would think modern day actresses would draw upon these films for inspiration at awards shows. Lana's white with green stripe gown and the diamonds and emeralds is beyond stunning.

reply

Yes, that gown is simple but gorgeous; you could wear that today to the Oscars and be named best dressed!

reply

It may not be that sophisticated, but I was drooling over Lara's short white sparkly dress.

Oh my God! That was a beautiful dress. Loved it!

^^Agreed!! I'm not even into high fashion or anything but damn, Lana Turner in that dress is immaculate.

When theres no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.

I loved that dress...stunning..I also loved the silver long dress with the fitted short jacket and mink sleeves and collar.

reply

I totally agree. All of the dresses were gorgeous, but I especially loved the white, strapless, sparkly dress she wore for the party after her first dramatic play. Wow, it was stunning! I actually paused the movie and took screen caps of the dress to post on Facebook so I could show my friends how glamorous the clothes were back then! And yes, the white dress with the green scarf and the emeralds and diamonds were breathtaking! I think I was born in the wrong era, too, because I love the styles of the 40's and 50's.

reply

The coat with the cheetah fur, the white sparkly dress.....all the clothes were breathtakingly beautiful!

So enjoying this fashion show! :)

Agree, 100%. Just watched the film last night, finally, all the way through. The white (?) colored-gown with the green scarf/stripe was my favorite. I also loved the blue/periwinkle lace dress she was wearing towards the end, during her daughter's "I love Steve" spiel.

WOW. I would love to know who designed those gowns....the Oscar should have gone their way if it didn't!

reply

The gowns were designed by Jean Louis, a big name back in the 50s.

reply

The commentator said the wardrobe cost over one million dollars then. Can you imagine how much that would be in today's money?

reply

I think that blue lace number was supposed to be pajamas!!!!!

Just watching the movie, I had it on PVR from TCM, and I have to agree, Lana Turner's outfits were gorgeous! I loved the one she wore when the director was waiting to attend the party with her, and Annie told him to have her home at a decent time. The white and emerald one was stunning, there were so many beautiful designs. This is one of the reasons I love watching the movies from this era, the outfits were so classy! No plunging necklines, no booty hanging out, just pure class!

reply

Gotta be honest, the costumes are half the reason I love to watch this movie. That sparkly dress, the fabric, wow! But I also like Sandra Dee's dresses. Even their every day clothes are fun. I seriously was born in the wrong decade.

reply

Love the dresses more than the story too. Especially the white dress with the green scarf.

reply

I completely agree! Today's "role models" for the most part don't have this type of class or respect for themselves or anyone else. Jesus Christ once said "To those who much is given much is required" which is similar to the quote attributed to Voltaire (and Stan Lee) "With great power comes great responsibility". I feel like modern society is really circling the toilet bowl these days.

I was shocked that Edith Head wasn't the costumer designer on this movie (she's always been my favorite). But Jean Louis was definitely robbed of an Oscar. The gowns were exquisite! The white dress that Sandra Dee wore on her graduation day could easily have been worn as a wedding dress in my opinion.

reply

They were stunning and glamorous.
