One of the best directors ever, and no messages.
Unbelievable.
you're right. for some reason he gets the least exposure of the great foreign directors of that time (of all time really, foreign or not). Fellini, Bergman, Kurusawa, all considered "the master", when I see one of their films I immediately understand why they are worshipped, they are on another level no doubt; but after seeing this trilogy there is no doubt in my mind that Ray should be at the top of that or any list. I hope in the future they restore and release more of his films; I've only seen the Apu trilogy and will have to somehow hunt down his others. One of my favorite quotes is on Ray's IMDB bio page, from Kurusawa, you should check it out if you haven't seen it...something like "To have not seen the films of Ray is like living in the world with ever having seen the moon or the sun." Not bad. No wonder the guy's nickname was God.
shareI remember watching the Oscars in 1992 or so when Ray got an Oscar for lifetime achievement. I think he was sick and gave his acceptance speech from his hospital bed. At the time I'd never heard of him and it seemed most people in the audience hadn't either, given their puzzled looks.
shareYou are right; and then you go to the page of a movie like "Cop Out" (that is total shii*t) and has got 4 pages full of messages.
What the hell is going on :[
