If I remember correctly it is one of the few episodes of The Twilight Zone that wasn’t based on a scifi or supernatural plot. It all takes place in his mind.

That’s true. Another one comes to mind is the episode “King Nine Will Not Return” the seed of which was the disappearance of the “Lady Be Good” in the Libyan desert in 1943.

That’s what I hadn’t realized until I read the Times piece … that there was some kernel of truth behind “Where Is Everybody?” too - however small it might be.
