Over the top with the word like

Sorry but they overuse this word, to the point of nausea.

The whole show is caricature. It truly is horrible tv of any era. Sorry , there were moron shows of every era and this is a moron show from the early 60's.

You're referring to Maynard? I think he was just trying awfully hard to be a "real" beatnik.

I know some real people who WAY overuse certain words and phrases. There's one guy who says "y'know" literally every third or fourth word sometimes -- drives me nuts!

reply

That was how people spoke back then, especially when they were, y’know, like, high.

reply

Some perfectly sober people that I know talk like that nowadays. Can't think that I've heard "like" used in that way recently, but definitely "y'know" and the ever-popular "umm" when somebody's having trouble thinking of the right word, especially if they're doing something else (e.g., driving) at the same time.

reply

I've never seen this show, but I've heard that one of the characters was the inspiration for Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. Guess that might explain why Shaggy says 'Like' so often!

reply

I've never seen Scooby-Doo, but I've heard that all four (?) of the main characters are based on characters from Dobie Gillis. So it sounds like you're probably right!

reply

Or breathing.

Some of the posters here need to be reminded.

I know: sad.
