I had supposedly heard that Dean Martin took this, his first serious film role, for short money compared to what he was earning working the night clubs. He wasn't very sure he could pull off the performance, but Monty worked with Martin, giving him dramatic acting pointers and helping him through the rough spots. The result was probably the best Dean Martin movie performance in History. Liz Taylor said that Clift helped her to perform better on screen as well. Montgomery Clift probably wouldve made a great Director or acting coach, had he wanted to go in that direction.
I couldn't agree more, and it may have helped Monty to survive a bit longer than he did. It was interesting that one of the User Comments indicated that he was "too old" to play this part. Unfortunately he wasn't that old--he just looked that way as this role proceeded his horrible car accident which occurred during the filiming of Raintree County with Elizabeth Taylor. I saw an interview recently where another famous actor related the fact the Monty couldn't stand to look at himself on film post-accident and that he was never truly the same after it.
Not totally true. Granted he never quite had the same handsome looks after the accident. But in several bio's I've read, friends said there was also already some significant change in his looks before the accident due to his drinking and drug use. But the great Monty, really used a good bit of make-up for the part of Noah to further make himself look more ethnic. There was a slight prosthetic on the nose and he had his ears bent out and he purposely lost a good amount of weight for the role.
He was great in the part. And did help Dean Martin a great deal as was said, and also Liz Taylor in "Place in the Sun" and "Raintree County" and both Donna Reed and Frank Sinatra in "From Here to Eternity", both of whom won Oscars. I agree Monty could have been a great coach and director. He was an amazing talent and was often very generoous with his costars. He also worked alot with Hope Lang on this film as well.
As a side note, I think he was the love of the great Liz Taylor's life. When Richard Burton was married to Liz, he'd once said in a wonderfully matter-of-fact and not jealous-at-all statement to Monty; "Monty, Liz loves me, but she adores you!"
I read that when Brando hurt his ankle during the filming, Monty offered him a swig from his thermos which Brando did not know was full of powerful drugs. Brando was completely out of it for hours.
