Prew and Noah

I know a lot of people say the role of Noah Ackerman is just a reprise of Pvt. Robert E. Lee Prewitt, but I disagree. Prew can fight well but won't. Noah insists on fighting even though he isn't much good at it. Anyway, it's always good to see Montgomery Clift punching people.

...and getting punched.

Interesting: in one scene, there is a close-up of Noah's grotesquely mangled face. Only one eye open. Stitches across his lips. Blood.

Clift had recently had that car accident that "changed" his face. By casting him as a guy whose face is beaten-in, the "problem was covered."

I think Prew was a more aggressive and rebellious type than Noah.

Noah had a sense of duty and quiet determination.

I don't think these roles are the same at all. I think people just compare them due to Monty's style of acting.

Clift lost his good looks after his facial surgery post car crash in 1957. Too bad. Bogart was no beauty, and he did pretty well. Might have been OK if we hadn't seen what Clift looked like on film pre-car crash.
