help? someone missing a hand?

fellow imdb-ers!
i am trying to find a movie that my history class watched in 7th grade (2002-2003). it was (what any 13 year old would think) a "really old movie" and it was about vikings, and i remember it had a similar plot to this film and it had a big viking funeral at the end. the characters look the same/similar, but at some point in the movie, there was a big battle and someone important's hand got chopped off. is that this movie or a different one?

i suppose its entirely possible im mixing this up with tristan and isolde, but i distinctly remember it being a viking movie watched in class with a missing hand.

any clues?

i've gotta be me. everyone else was already taken.- Frank and Earnest comic

I think the only hand chopping scene in the Vikings is Eric's.
I remember another hand chopping scene in another historical romp called "Taras Bulba" with Yul Brynner.
Sorry I could not be of more help.

I think the movie you are thinking about is 'The Long Ships' with Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier.

I have vague recollections that Widmark gets his had cut off at some stage - but I may be wrong.

Check it out: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057259/
