Ernest as the father of Kirk

A little strange that they used Ernest as the father of Kirk in this movie. Kirk is after all one year older than Ernest.

Kirk Douglas Born: 1916
Ernest Borgnine: Born: 1917

That was explained perfectly. Good Show.

Douglas was about six and a half weeks older than Borgnine, but their casting was perfect in spite of the age oddity.

Douglas was always seen as a youthful, virile romantic lead whereas Borgnine was a grizzled character actor. The casting only makes no sense on paper - on screen it works out just fine.

Absolutely. Sometimes math is a waste of time. This is one of those times. I always loved EB's characters in movies.
