What was the point of the Barbara Bel Geddes character? Don't get why she was there then just faded out. And where was the wife done in. Did I miss summat?

Yuck. I gave it a 2.
shareHaven't watched it in ages, but I think the wife is the dead body you see on the church roof... I might be wrong...
shareFor you to ask such a question clearly reveals that this type of movie isn't for you. An understanding of all the who, what, wheres is better gleened from a psychological analysis of the film rather than a literal contemplation of it's events.
Not to sound insulting but who cares where Elster's wife was murdered? Knowledge of that is superfluous. Vertigo isn't a detective's "who done it" nor a murder mystery either. It's clearly revealed to us halfway through the film who did it and why they did it. The film is a romantic psychological drama.
With that in mind, re-examine your thoughts on what Midge's (Barbara Bel Geddes) character brings to the story.
Although there are several aspects to leave you with, the quickest that comes to mind is how she perhaps represented a certain normalcy in Scottie's life--as unattainable to him as was the object of his obsessions.
