Kurosawa´s pencil is always so great, no matter the meaning

The farmers who entered war to earn a lot of money and be rich, who abandoned their village and sold their houses to achieve his major objective, a lucrative one.

The real thing this movie shows is that these two splendidly charactherized comical guys really achieve a great goal, but that goal is not seen by the senses, it´s something metaphysical that they can´t understand.

This movie really shows us the most famous Plato myth in a fantastic masterpiece made by this unique director Kurosawa is. It is not action, or comedy, or something physical that can deceive us. It´s just methaphysical inside formalism. A great formalism that of Kurosawa. This film is like a great picture of Picasso- the Guernika for example-: it has a deep meaning, but also has a deep formalism who attracs us to wath it and admire it. In this movie this two elements go together and that´s the reason why it is so great. It is beautiful by the senses and it´s beautiful by our mind, our souls.

I agree, the film is full of meaning and doesn't strive too hard in any particular direction. It tells a story that stimulates us on the surface, and also at the same time gives a lot of subtlety and depth to characters.

Its not only a fun film, it also has a lot of hidden meaning, and some interesting philosophical themes.
