Somehow, I imagine, that the Major and Rufus were actually good friends in their early days then they had a falling out. Perhaps, they were both socially/economically on the same level, the Major's fortunes improved (maybe even in an underhanded way)causing some jealosy on Rufus'part, the major became insufferable, and then there was a falling out. What do you think?
shareI've had similar backstory speculations. I've even envisioned a scenario in which Rufus was a sergeant during the Civil War who served under the Major; saves the Major's life during a heated battle against the Yankees; goes into the cattle business with Terrill after the war, etc.; and, somewhere down the line, the two part company with bitter feelings that fester into what they would be by the time TBC's story unfolds.
