In the film's summary of TBC's home page here in IMBD, it states "New Englander McKay". It is mentioned at least twice in the film that he is from Baltimore where his fiancee visited and met him. Baltimore is not even close to being part of New England
He may have been from Baltimore but as a sea captain he could have been based and sailed from New England where large fishing and whaling fleets were located.

Yes, that hit me too. Sure, he could have been from New England - or Duluth for that matter - but there's nothing whatever to indicate this. Baltimore is not part of New England.
