I haven't read the Hamilton novel and I see it isn't even available in my library system (which isn't surprising for a mass market paperback last printed in 1971), but from some reviews I've read it seems to basically differ from the movie in that the story is padded with several more fights & scenes that don't necessarily add much to the overall story. There's a bit more backstory on McKay and why he'd rather avoid a fight or gunplay. I think the screenplay handles that well enough. One reviewer thought the novel better than the movie but another said while it isn't The Great American Novel it was enjoyable reading and loves the film very much.
Oh and in the novel everyone ends up working for Ramon, as it should be!!
(unfortunately not)
