I second The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Great great movie and James Stewart has a bit of a similar role as Gregory Peck.

Except Stewart, as Ranse Stoddard, ultimately took the easy way out. (Though this is to the credit of Stewart as an actor and as a professional, departing from his usual "noble"-types to play somebody who compromises on something that goes against everything he believes in.)

"Duel in the Sun" for sure, which came out 12 years earlier than "The Big Country" and also starred Gregory Peck, albeit a totally different type of character (proving Peck's acting genius).

For realism, tension, and great acting don't miss Day of the Outlaw (1959)featuring Robert Ryan and Burl Ives.

I recall back in the 1970s NYC when "Duel in the Sun" played on television and the New York Times gave a description in paper referring to Peck as a "mean coyote."

This is my favorite Western EVER. But movies with a similar theme are The Furies and The Violent Men ( both with Barbara Stanwyck), and Gunman's Walk ( Van Heflin is very much like Henry Terrill). Movies like Ride The High Country, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence and to a lesser extent Shane and The Searchers are different movies ( The Searchers comes closest).

It's mine as well, but I'm not a fan of westerns. Would you mind explaining why this -- as well as the others you like -- is your favorite?

This movie has everything you could possibly want. Scenery, music, Oscar winning performance ( Burk Ives). But one thing you generally do not find in Westerns are things NOT being so cut and dry. You think at the beginning the Hannassey's are the evil ones, you think Jim would end up with Pat, and you do not know the final fates of Steve and Pat.Throw in Gregory Peck who in my opinion is the most underrated Western Actor who ever lived. If you go through the list you will find maybe three ( Mackenna's Gold, (Billy Two Hats which I have not seen) and Old Gringo) are not considered Classics. The only Actor who tops that is Henry Fonda. Did I forget to mention the only women more beautiful in a Western then Jean Simmons were Salma Hayek ( Bandidas), Rosanna Schiaffino (The Man Called Noon), and Drew Barrymore ( Bad Girls). I would rank this movie in my Top Five films in History. 1: Rocky IV. 2: Manhattan Melodrama ( Myrna Loy ( along with Salma my favorite actress)). 3: The Godfather.4: Stakeout.I can go on but you get the picture.
