The iconic final scene (spoilers)

One intriguing aspect about the final scene is the people who are missing in that procession. Death has said that "the knight and his companions" could not escape him. Yet, the knight's wife, Karin, and the mute girl apparently did, as they are not among the six people led to their deaths in the iconic "dance of death" scene. Raval and Skat, who both died earlier in the film, are included in that dance. Also killed earlier was the Joan of Arc-looking girl who was burned at the stake, yet she also isn't in the dance of death. My own explanation is that the knight's wife and the mute girl simply haven't reached "their time" yet, so they may have been spared. And the absence of the girl who died at the stake may indicate that she may have "gone to the other place," which is understandable for a martyr like Joan of Arc. This topic of the inclusion and exclusion of some of the characters will continue to inspire discussion, no doubt, since the film's ending doesn't explain it.
