This was fantastic

I really want to see more of Ingmar Bergman's filmography. I hope most of his films were this good. Or, if this was the best he ever did, I'm still interested to see his other work.

Persona was the first Bergman film I ever saw, and it left such an impression that it made me want to seek out his other work.

In my opinion it is the best, but there are several other great films you should really watch, including

Smultronstället (AKA Wild Strawberries)
Jungfrukällan (AKA The Virgin Spring)
Vargtimmen (AKA Hour of the Wolf)
Persona
Såsom i en spegel (AKA Through a Glass Darkly)

My list is:

Höstsonaten (Autumn Sonata)
Smultronstället (Wild Strawberries). Which is an insufficient translation, but moving on...
Nattvardsgästerna (Winter Light)
Såsom i en spegel (Trough a glass darkly).

I haven't watched the whole "Jungfrukällan" but I really liked what I saw.

In the special features portion of the Criterion Wild Strawberries DVD, I think it's Peter Cowie's comment that the title actually translated from Swedish is "The Strawberry Patch".

Does the Swedish title imply something different from a bland English-language title?

reply

"Wild strawberry patch/spot" would be the accurate translation. Wild Strawberry is however a better title in my opinion.

In Sweden we call a personal favourite spot "smultronställe". Café, glade, island etc.

I feel like Wild Strawberries is a great introductory film. It has all his regulars (except Harriet Andersson and of course Liv Ullman who had not been discovered yet) and it is rather hopeful. Smiles of a Summer Night is a great intro film. But his trilogy of faith, Fanny & Alexander and The Virgin Spring are all awesome for new Bergman fans

I have only seen 2 other Bergman works. Persona - This might actually bore some people, personally I give it 8/10 - & Fanny And Alexander - This left such an impression on me, I LOVED this film. I only saw the 3 1/2 hour version but still I really liked it, I give it 10/10.
