Why does it get so much praise?

just watched "Det sjunde inseglet" the other night and while it had some powerful scenes, I found it flawed as a movie. now I'm wondering, why it still holds the iconic status in Bergmans body of work. just because it was the first real "Bergman movie"?
so I want to ask if anyone can recommend further reading on "Det sjunde inseglet" (online or book), would love to put the whole thing into context.

thanks in advance!

My theory:
The scenes with Death were incredibly strong and perfectly executed and that made people overlook the rest, the nonsense.

It gets praise for its stark presentation of God's "presence through absence" in an age haunted by this question during the years of plague, witch persecution and the terrible fragility of life in a coldly indifferent universe.

Taste changes with time, plus, it's legendary status probably contributed to people sometimes expecting too much from The Seventh Seal. It's not easy to understand the meaning of everything from the first watching. So, don't be disappointed if You're not thrilled or get a bit confused after it. My recommendation - once You've seen it, check some good reviews, that point out at some strong metaphors You've might missed. I've seen a great TV show about Bergman films with an expert explaining many things I didn't realized myself about The Seventh Seal. But it's in my native language - Serbian, so I guess that wouldn't do You much help. You can check this review, though:

It's not all 'bout The Seventh Seal, but read the penultimate paragraph as well.

It's ok, you can call it the Seventh Seal.

Can't stop the signal.
