Why did he die...

He should've lived. Like he could've tricked death or something.

There is no tricking Death. Everyone's time comes sooner or later.

One of the things that makes The Seventh Seal so great is its relentless refusal to give a reason why Block's time has come. Death makes some allusion early in the film to having been by Block's side for some time, but of course this has an ironic element. I believe it is clearly intended to refer to some combination of the risks Block ran on his Crusade journeys, and also perhaps to the mere risks of the journey home. But now that he is home, having survived the Crusades (and the difficulties the Squire later refers to) and the journey home, why is it then that Death comes for him?

Even the presence of the Plague provides no answer. There is no indication given that Block and the others actually come down with the plague.

Instead it is the fierce reality of impending death that is the focus rather than some examamination of a particular "reason" for his death. Brilliant.

I wonder if even Death knew why it was his time. I love that even Death itself had no answers for Block.

He did trick death, the family of actors with the baby were supposed to die, along with everyone else.

The night when the family tries to slip away while Death and Block are playing, Block notices the family attempting to flee and then "accidentally" knocks over the pieces on the chess board, he caused the distraction that allowed the family to slip away successfully, thus cheating death.

After death resets the pieces, he asks Block if he ever accomplished the meaningful deed he set out to do, and once Block notices the family has gotten away safely he replies to Death, "Yes, I have."
