did I miss something?

I just watched this film for the first time, because it sounded like there was an interesting plot and it had a high rating.

I'm sure if I watched it again it would make more sense, but at this point I'm not convinced it would be worth the time.

It seems like I just spent 90 minutes watching a movie where the character realizes he cannot escape death and he's unsure of the afterlife. Is there more to it?

Is there more to it?

It's about the absence of God too. A man struggling with his beliefs in the face of adversity. He knows there is life and death, but what is there to them? Is there any meaning to all of it?

The fact that death has no answers either as it is 'unknowing' is significant because that suggests no afterlife. Earlier in the film Block comments on how bad the world would be if there were no God beyond. As the time progresses he discovers a form of spirituality in the presence of the small family, who Bergman termed as holy. The fact that the family consist of mother, father and son has religious connotations and perhaps some of the film's meaning is that whatever story we tell ourselves, including religious, the most important thing is to find the embodiment of that in others and oneself.

Why problem make? When you no problem have, you don't want to make ...

If anything, at least you've seen it now so you don't have to watch it again if you don't want to.

This movie focuses on playing with your emotions. And your own thoughts of life, death, religion etc. That is why so many love it, because everyone can relate.
Almost all of the story is in the details of the characters, dialogue, background stories, cinematography, music, symbolism.

It's not a movie about cool plot twists.
(I hope that doesn't sound condescending but in all honesty it sounds like your main problem was that you expected a different movie).

But it sounds that you got the major strokes of the movie, you didn't miss anything it's just how you personally feel about the movie that determines your enjoyment.

I think I had the same experience as you but with Eraserhead, to me it was just a movie about a guy's fear of becoming a father.

Zardoz (1974) has spoken!

On the other hand we see death taking everyone over to the other side ... to Heaven? To nothing? It allows you to make the decision at the end. I think the acting couple would like to believe they are going to meet their reward -- and why should we not believe that possible.
