How times have changed!

While I was watching the scenes where Major Gruver stands near the bridge as Hana-ogi goes to and from her performances, I couldn't help thinking how much things have changed in what society deems acceptable in a man's pursuit of a woman. Years ago, Major Gruver probably would have been viewed as tenacious and bold - a man who knew what he wanted and went after it - by his repeated visits to the bridge in the hopes of getting to know the beautiful Hana-ogi.
These days, if a man were to do the same thing in the hopes of getting to know a woman he found attractive, she'd probably call the police and have him arrested for "stalking".
Oh, how times have changed!

Dunno, maybe they gonna do some day a movie about gay marriage (and one doen't need to be gay to think about it).

Bloody PC *beep* - nowadays you can't even sexually harass, threaten and stalk women without being labelled a pervert!

OMFG, aren't BASTARDS just BEAUTIFUL?!?!

No intelligent person would believe that it is OK for a man to sexually harass, threaten or stalk a woman. My initial post was meant merely to show how what society deems acceptable behavior as a man attempts to get to know a woman he is interested in has changed over the years.

Well said Chief Brody!

Yes, Major Gruver's actions by the bridge, watching for Hana-Ogi, would likely be called stalking today.
Was thinking that as well, while watching the film yesterday.

I know guys where I've worked that have been fired just trying to talk to women they found attractive.
(they were contractors, not regular employees).
We've become a sad PC nation, with many nosy busy-bodies who need to put down their tabloid-loving ways and get a life of there own...
(IMHO of course) ;-)

Same thing with My Fair Lady. A suitor of hers sings an entire song - On the Street Where You Live - that is all about how he is going to wait around outside her house, admiring her from afar, until she comes out to admit she loves him, too. Today that would get you a visit from the police.

Back in the 80s a friend of mine tried the secret admirer route with a woman he was interested in. She liked it at first, but then her female "friends" convinced her that it was sick and that the admirer must be a pervert. I'm sure the fact that she was getting all this attention while they got none had absolutely nothing to do with their attempts to make her feel horrible about it. (rolls eyes)
