Throne of Blood vs. Ran

Just watched Throne of Blood. Both are shakespeare adaptations. Both are similar stylistically. I'd have to go with Ran though. It was a little long, but the acting, cinematography, and depth of it was superb. I expect bias since this is Throne of Blood board so i'll post same question on Ran board.

Tarantino movies are like arcade style video games.

Throne of Blood is great, but I believe Ran to be his second best film, after Seven Samurai...it additionally sits as #11 on my favorite films of all-time list. I like it more because the story is told on a much grander scale, I think the color cinematography was absolutley amazing (although I'm glad he stayed away from it for so long, up until the mid-60s), as an ensemble, the performances were among some of the best in his film, and there are just scenes which stick out signficantly more. Throne of Blood has probably my favorite ending out of any film he's done though. I own both films on DVD, but I believe Ran merits a lot more on reapeat viewings. There's always something new to notice, or appreciate whenever you see it, Throne of Blood's much more low-key story provides a general familiarity with all the scenes after seeing it a few times, but there's absolutlkey nothing wrong with that. It might even be because of the fact that I've read Macbeth, and not King Lear. Either way, Ran takes this one, but Throne of Blood is an easy 9.5/10 from me, still one of the best films from a director who has absolutley no mediocre films.

i agree, though I put Dersu Uzala as one of his best films. And Kurosawa had no mediocre films, for sure (well i didnt like red beard). I would put him as one of the top 5 greatest directors of all time.

Ran is better than Throne of Blood, although both are excellent films.

Its a close call, but Ran wins for me, even though Throne of Blood has two more memorable scenes (the first scene with the witch, and the death scene at the end). Ran's power is in part the fact that this man has been making movies for almost 40 years at this point and he can still churn out these kinds of masterpieces. And, in this case, in vibrant color.

This is akin to asking a Dylan fan which is better: Highway 61 Revisited or Blonde on Blonde. (Image of head exploding). Of course some Dylan fans will say Bringing it all Back Home (Seven Samurai) or Blood on the Tracks (Yojimbo)or even Time Out of Mind (Kagemusha). Okay, I'm being silly. I personally consider Ran to be the greatest film ever made. The cinematography is amazing. The acting is beyond belief. Nakadai is haunting as the Lear figure. The scene when Hidetora leaves the burning castle after being betrayed by his son is special. No CGI there. That castle is really on fire man. THAT's friggin' filmmaking! The culmination of a great filmmaker. (I can't help but thinking how over the top brilliant it would have been if Mifune and Kurosawa could have buried the hatchet and teamed up for this film).

People seem to forget that The Bad Sleep Well was also a (rough) Shakespeare adaptation (of Hamlet).
