Rumor I heard

I heard that Akira Kurosawa told the actor who was getting shot at with arrows that the arrows were fakes, but used real ones, so the look of fright on his face was real.

Last film seen (that I haven't seen before): Die Hard 9/10

I heard the same thing (The actor is Toshiro Mifune if you didn't know). I also heard that Mifune wasn't to pleased about it, and nearly quit (though I am not sure as to how accurate this is).

How could you have a fake arrow, anyway? You mean it's unloaded?

I think she owns that famed book "The Emperor and the Wolf".

It never really mentions the fake arrow idea in the book. The book states that according to Mifune, Kurosawa wanted to use a bunch of amateur archers - basically extras, to shoot the arrows, so that they wouldn't exactly hit their target straight. But even with the armor Mifune was wearing, it still really stung, and the man was not acting scared. He was scared (!) which then lead him to have nightmares that he was being bombed.

In the book, it was the assistant director, Michio Yamamoto, who stated that "Right after we shot that scene, Mifune had a nightmare that he was being bombed."

poor guy.

I was always upset at him for splitting after Red Beard, but after hearing this story, I don't really blame him. He probably just couldn't take Kurosawa anymore.

But man, if Kurosawa didn't push him to the limit and make some amazing films!!
