Imitated and an imitator

So he has done Shakespeare before, like King Lear into "Ran". It's amazing that he can re-do such classicals but can also spawn them. Like Star Wars from the Hidden Fortress, The Body Guard (into Last man standing) and other great films.

Wasn't there a Tie-Fighter in "The Hidden Fortress"?

Funny, smartass comments aside....the idea that was borrowed was telling the story from the vantage point of a "lower" class(HF - 2 thieves ; SW -2 droids)and they also provide the comic relief for the otherwise weighty subject matter. There are other parallels (saving a Princess, reluctant hero etc....) and since Lucas does admit to being a Kurosawa fan, I have to feel that it was a great influence (among many, many others) on Star Wars.

Also, Lucas originally wanted Toshiro Mifune to play Obi-Wan!

You're right. Scarcely can I read a review or anything critical on THF without everyone trying to tie it into Star Wars. Even on the segment on THF's dvd Lucas talks about how it's not even in his top 3 Kurosawa. It's probably just laziness that leads people to think things like this.

Kurosawa has actually done three adaptations. Throne of Blood & Ran are well known, but he also did a take on Hamlet with 'The Bad Sleep Well'. I think Ran is easily his best of the three, but I found the other two quite intriguing as well.
