I've read about how they managed to set up the arrows on wires so that they went to the correct place, but I was wondering how Kurosawa pulled off the arrow shot which actually kills Mifune's character?

It didn't look to me like there was a Stop Trick or anything like that unless it was just very well done but with the speed the arrow comes in at it really look as though he's actually been shot.

I'm finding it funny that some of Kurosawa's films are rated on FilmFour as PG (ii's Kurosawa season at the moment) when they are amazingly brutal. More brutal to me than a lot of horror films because the brutality here feels so real. Perhaps with Throne of Blood it's helped by the source material but even in Yojimbo there are a couple of limbs dropping off and a dog chewing on an arm.

It was definitely stop trick. When he's shot in the back, stumbles and almost goes to his knees, it cuts to him getting shot with the arrow and rises. It's so quick and seamless.

Don't have the answer but on the Yojimbo point. I think one of the opening scenes it like an arm flying off. Some of the other deaths make it seem like they ran outta budget though. Hahaha, just find it funny that some of those sword deaths are gruesome and others its like he hits them awkwardly with the sword and they're dead.

Oh, I love a picnic. Acres and acres of sand and all of it in your food.
