Most frightening witch---EVER.

What in the hell did they do to "her" voice...?

My god, the way Kurosawa photographs the witch/spirit, and makes her speak...it just chills my veins, more than pretty much any Western so-called "horror" film...

Anyone agree?

I think the witch frighten me mainly because asian oriented people have some eerie disturbing gestures that gives you chill. She reminds me of my grandmother without the make-up and sound effects.

reply

Absolutely. I came here to comment on the "witch" in Throne of Blood. She/it raised the hairs on the back of my neck which is something not even the scariest modern horror films do to me. I can't put my finger on it, but there was something very, very wrong with that spirit.

Miki's ghost creeped me out even more. Both were done brilliantly though.

reply

Nah. That was just his wife with a smoke machine. She had been banging Miki (and was pregnant with his son) and they were having a bit of fun while plotting his demise. Her and Miki (who wasn't really killed either) were behind the whole thing. His ghost was a simple holographic projection.

Oh my God, this Witch was amazing to behold. And it's a spectacle made all the better when you consider the confines of the age.
Black, almost hollow eyes. A voice which sometimes didn't match up with their lips, and delved into eerie-tone shifts, making it impossible to even tell their gender. And a kind of stillness, as though they were a single, shuddering image, or trick of the light.

So subtle, and yet so absolutely terrifying. This stooped, hunched figure with the spinning wheel immediately put my hackles up, and I feared for these two gruff, battle-hardened soldiers. There was such a real sense of danger.

An amazing performance, perhaps only rivaled by the Witches in the Polanski version.

reply

Absolutely. I hadn't seen this movie in 9 years before last night, and one of the things I best remembered was how much the forest spirit creeped me out. Especially in the second encounter.
