Most frightening witch---EVER.

What in the hell did they do to "her" voice...?

My god, the way Kurosawa photographs the witch/spirit, and makes her speak...it just chills my veins, more than pretty much any Western so-called "horror" film...

Anyone agree?

reply

I agree. When I first watched this film and saw that witch, I was literally like "O_O" with me eyes. And considering this was 1957 with no special makeup or affects and such, they did a pretty damn good job.

Yeah it's creepy as hell. As far as creepy witches go, I think SUSPARIA takes the biscuit, but ToB is way too effective for it's 1957 date.

I thought it was a man too!

Rashomon has another creepy scene involving a possessed medium.

You're telling me! We're doing Macbeth at school and my best mate and I jumped out of our seats. It gives me the creeps!

oh that witch made the movie for me, throne of blood was in my opinion kurosawas weakest film out of seven samurai, rashomon, ran, ikiru, throne of blood.
but yeh the witch was leegndary, i thot it was a man with a womans voice or something, who knows its gender i mean it is a spirit

I thought the witch was really freaky on my first viewing, and Washizu's second encounter with it even more so. The medium in Rashomon is rather freaky herself.

reply

It isn't a witch. It's an evil spirit of Spiders Web Forest. Also, it is male.

i wasn't sure of the spirit's gender either
and that's what makes it so appropriate
when you think about the play
and how Macbeth approached the witches
he wasn't sure whether they were women either;
i mean they had beards

and maybe it was me
but i thought the wife at times
was more disturbing

Vetch, I like that thought, that the spirit is both and neither. Sometimes it looks like an old woman with a mans voice, and in another scene it becomes a few different men. Either way, it's quite creepy.

Asaji is without a doubt the most disturbing character though. So evil, it makes my spine tingle. And when she's trying to wash blood from her hands, and loses her mind...yikes.

yes, asaji was very disturbing. and when the subtitles read "I cannot agree" then always something rather unpleasant was going to happen (to be said)

the character is a a 'yamaba' from japanese folklore, a female character. i think kurosawa's goal was to make it androgynous

reply

I didn't think it was that effective. Yes, I know how that looks with this username. No need to be elitist about it though. I thought the rest of the movie was great.

Very creepy, but how about the medium in Rashomon? Maybe less scare, but possibily even more disturbing.

Wizadora used to give me the creeps when I was little... ok I admit lol porbablys not that little! :P

reply

The medium in Rashoman is just weird, the witch or whatever the voice was is pretty crazy in this too.

reply

the witch was terrifying and the song was so creepy too! the notes were just so wrong and out of place but so eerie

wow amazing to see that it wasn't just me .... just to show just how remarkably talented and creative Kurosawa was to create such powerful and timeless imagery that remains positively creepy to this day.
