I just saw my first Elvis movie
This morning, MGM+ had it on so I watched it.
Full disclosure - I'm middle of the road when it comes to Elvis - neither a big fan nor detractor, although I thought his live Hawaiian TV concert bordered on brilliant.
But his acting. Yikes. Elvis' character comes off as a big douche, which I guess he was supposed to be, but he didn't show any internal conflict that would foretell his later improvement as a human and suitable lover for Peggy, nor much buried humanity for that matter.
It seems to me that Elvis was trying to channel young Brando or James Dean. He got some of the brooding right but there was nothing beneath the surface.
Lack of acting subtlety aside, it was still Elvis, and I'm sure back in 1957 (the year I was born), guys left the theater thinking Elvis was cool their girlfriends left moist.
