What was cut from the spider battle?

If you watch the end of the spider battle, as Scott stabs the spider in the belly with his pin, you see the ichor running down the pin and covering his hands. The frame then freezes for about ten or twelve frames though the soundtrack continues. Clearly some frames have been removed here. (Occurs at about 72 minutes on the DVD)

Anyone know what the removed frames showed? Just more yukky spider juice, or something else?

As far as I know, the scene has always appeared this way. Although I don't remember if it did this when I saw it as a child back in the 1970s on WWOR New York 9, I know the scene freezes for a few frames on the VHS version, because I own that, too.

I would imagine the studio tried to sugar coat that scene a little bit back in the 50s because Universal at that time didn't feature a lot of gore in its science fiction and horror films.

what a great scene!

I'll have to agree with the others: I don't think anything much was cut out of that scene, and I saw it once when it came out in 1957 and again a few years later. Then again, memories can be terribly unreliable: I don't recall anything about midgets in the movie.

Well, fifty years is fifty years...

The scientists give Carey a treatment that seems to arrest his shrinking at about midget size. It's here that he befriends a midget woman for a little while. But then he starts shrinking again.
