I was very disappointed when Universal included this film in their Classic Sci-Fi set, as it certainly merited an individual release in a Special Edition comparable to IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE. But as it was the only way to get SHRINKING MAN and several others in OAR, I bought the set. And when I saw recently that Universal announced an individual DVD release, I was a little miffed.
NOW they've released SHRINKING MAN as in individual DVD for $19.99 -and it's BARE BONES!!!! Oh well, at least I don't have to buy it again. Don't know if the Blu-ray has any special features, but as I don't do Blu-ray I'm not worried about it - at least I don't have to buy another DVD of the film. I'd say "Shame on Universal!" but there's no point - their treatment of the film is in accordance with the way all the studios are now treating vintage films on DVD, which is to say, hardly at all, except for on-line made-on-demand via the Warner Archives and similar programs - I'm not averse to those programs and never have been, because they meant that many films would have DVD availability that otherwise wouldn't, but the studios quickly saw that as a way to cut back drastically on 'official' releases of older films, especially black-and-white ones.
"In my case, self-absorption is completely justified."
