A Face in the Crowd VS Meet John Doe

Does it strike anyone that these two films are the same polar opposites of each other? Barbara Stanwick/Patricia Neil and Gary Cooper/Andy Griffith. What if John Doe was a son of a bitch? You'd have Lonesome Rhodes. And how would his creator feel to know she created him?

Agreed. I just re-watched this film and was immediately struck by the similarities. I doubt Kazan would be too keen on the comparison, though. I don't think he was all that keen on Capra. And though it is not a fashionable viewpoint, I think Meet John Doe, despite all its flaws, is the superior film. This one starts off well and degenerates into a screaming mess. Patricia Neal is quite good.

If she weighs the same as a duck, she's made of wood.

Yeah, while watching the movie I thought this is the cynic's Meet John Doe.
