Wow, interesting!
I never knew if they shot the film on the actual location or if it was elsewhere. Kwai is one of my favorite films. I see you gave it a 7 :( but it's an easy 10 for me. It's probably the only of Lean's films I can sit through over and over again.
Well, they shot the film in Sri Lanka with a different bridge that they built just for the movie, but the incident was based on what happened with this bridge in Burma, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bridge_on_the_River_Kwai#Historical_parallels

I loved this movie since I was a kid. I was incredibly excited to get to see the real bridge in 1989.
