Who could play Bart Maverick?

If they ever do a sequel to the 1994 film version of "Maverick" Mel Gibson would probably reprise his role as Bret but if Bart Maverick was included as a character in the sequel, who would be a good choice to play him? Anyone have any suggestions?

It's always been my opinion that Gibson was actually Bret's son, Bret Jr. The steamroom scene at the end convinced me with Garner pushing back his hat a la Bret and then shaving off his moustache in the tub. As we all know, Pappy always had a moustache, even in the portrait over the mantlepiece in BRET MAVERICK.

If a sequel ever gets made,I think it would better if it was 'cousin' Bart,if you get my drift. It shows that there are always going to be Mavericks from all over. As Bret says, from the BRET MAVERICK episode THE BALLARD OF BRET MAVERICK,"There's lots of Mavericks around, all of them involved in chancey enterprises." So,I say,let the family grow.

But to answer your question, I say Robert Downey,Jr or Matthew Broderick.

Downey is an interesting choice. I wouldn't want Broderick. He's too much of a weenie. The more I think about it the more I believe that Kevin Kline would make a great Bart Maverick even though he's nine years older than Gibson.

reply

Kline wouldn't work, for the very reason you describe. Bret was the older brother, and Kline has no charm or pizazz needed for the role. He was awful as Artemus Gordon in Will Smith's ludercris WILD WEST film. Unless he's 'cousin' Bart, part of the next generation of Mavericks, maybe, but Kline couldn't pull it off in a million years as the original Bart.

Actually, it was always left open ended as to which Maverick brother was the eldest-Bret or Bart. On the original series, each would claim to be the youngest when asked. In real life, Jack Kelly was a year older than James Garner so if you go by that then Bart was older.

Yes,it was one-upmanship between the brothers. But Bret was the first to be introduced and his birthdate, from THE DAY THEY HANGED BRET MAVERICK, was April 7,1847. I don't think they ever give Bart's. Anyway,it just seems logical that Bret was slightly older, but it never made any difference, really.

Well, they could cast Mel's real life brother Donal.

This is an obscure choice, but I'd pick Christian Kane.

Gibson never stamped his own identity on the Maverick role, besides he's too old. You're looking for a new Bret-Bart team in their early 30s.

reply

NO ONE. Jack Kelly was born to play the role of Bart Maverick and no one else.

I AGREE. AT AGE 10,JACK KELLY HAD AN UNCREDITED ROLE IN "SWING YOUR LADY".HE HAS A LINE AT THE END OF THE MOVIE THAT STARTS WITH "MY PAPPY USED TO SAY...".
HE WAS PLAYING BART AND DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT.

Interesting factoid, lindag111, but the caps lock isn't necessary.

Robert Downey Jr could be a good choice for Bart, but I actually think David Boreanez could pull off a great Brett.

He has the charm and physical presence, and that... facial mobility that lends itself well to Maverick's style of humor. Watch some of Bones from the first season and tell me you can't see it.

Hugh Jackman would do an excellent job as Bart.

I was thinking the same thing about Jackman
