Better Fighters than Gambler-Con Men

The most memorable episodes have Bret and/or Bart conning the conman. Case in point--John Dehner as the unscrupulous banker who somehow steals all of Bret's winnings. they're memorable because they're too few and fafr between.

The Mavericks are proud of their reluctance to get involved or put another way, their straight-out cowardice. Their mantra "He who runs away, gets to run away another day." Yet, in most episodes the Mavericks prevailed with their fists and firearms rather than their brains.

No surprise that men who live by gambling in the Old West can fight and shoot. Sore losers abounded, and most men carried firearms, a potentially volatile situation. What is sometimes surprising is how many men the Maverick Brothers DIDN'T shoot. The Harvey Stryker character in "Two Beggars on Horseback" is a prime example. The Brothers manage to get his money and ride away laughing, leaving Stryker to rue the day he ever messed with the Maverick Boys. "After all, business is business."
