James Best as Bart

The July 2015 issue of Classic Images Magazine has a long story about James Best by Joe Collura. In it, James is quoted as saying he turned down the role of Bart Maverick in the series because Warner Brothers wouldn't pay him $500 a week. He told them he could make $1500 as a guest star.

James Best might have made a very interesting Bart, but Jack Kelly was great in the role.

When Bret walks into the Cantina Americana, a girl is signing on the stairway accompanied by a guitarist. If you look closely at the guitar headstock, you notice it is a Gibson guitar. The episode takes place in July 1877. However, Gibson guitar company was not founded until 25 yrs later in 1902.

Chewbacca does not live on Endor. That's where the Ewoks are from.

Nice trivia / anochronisms tidbit, but what does it have to do with James Best and Bart Maverick?

All right, Johnny Cochran!

Best, at that point in his career, was more a serious actor who lacked the soft touch of a Jack Kelly. Best was at his best playing unhinged characters much like a Bruce Dern.

reply

Im glad Jack Kelly was Bart.

reply

Yeah, Jack was smooth and funny, and a perfect complement to Bret. Wouldn't have wanted anyone else in that role.

reply

Garner was glad it was Kelly, too. They remained friends for life.
