Just saw the 2010 restoration on a theater screen...

complete with Overture, DeMille introduction, Intermission, Entr'acte, and Exit Music.

Needless to say, no TV viewing could match it. Especially the annual ABC broadcast.

I saw it to at my local Cinemark theater. Every movie always looks better on the big screen as it was intended.

I saw it on Good Friday at the local Cinemark. It was excellent.

So far I've seen:

Ben Hur
Lawrence of Arabia
Vertigo
Rear Window
Ten Commandments

through the Cinemark classics series. It's awesome. Planning on seeing Spartacus next month.

Conquer your fear, and I promise you, you will conquer death.

Nice! That must have been quite a spectacle!

They did an excellent job restoring it. The older version had a cartoon-ish look to it in some places because of the lack of technology at that time, but it looks so much better now! Kudos to paramount!

I saw a DCP version at my local AMC, I assume the same restoration, credited as a 6K one. One of the grandest biblical epics ever filmed, and they put it on their most dingy screen :(. The DCP itself wasn't all that impressive either, kind of looked a but muddy, don't know if it was the projectionist (who seems to have shown it slightly pillarboxed), the cinema's equipment, or what. Shame, as I'd never seen the film before, and thought th big screen would be a treat. Guess it's a multiplex, what can you expect?

reply

It wouldn't be any better than 2K in a DCP theater. Also, the contrast and brightness could never match 70mm film. Ideally, this should be shown on a horizontal Vista Vision projector, but there aren't any.

Or transfer the frames 1 to 1 onto a 70 MM print and you will end up with the same exact picture quality as the original Vista Vision.

This process was used for the 1996 restoration of Vertigo which was also a Vista Vision production.

Saw the road show 2010 restoration at the Cinemark at Arundel Mills, MD yesterday.
Magnificent!

Must admit, modern theater seats are NOT made for 4-hour movies, however.
Cheers!

I saw it too - it was wonderful!

Luckily for us, it was in one of those theaters that has the large reclining leather chairs. My back couldn't hold out otherwise. 😃

Saw it last night and it was great.

The audience was very respectful, with no snide remarks and no talking during the music. They even stayed through the Exit Music.

I just saw a showing last night. What a spectacular film!

Just bought a double feature DVD at Walmart for $7.50, the restored full length versions of "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur", plus added extra features. Looks great and you can watch it at home !

I still can't believe I missed the re-release from earlier this year... guess I'll have to wait for a 65th Anniversary or 70th Anniversary re-release now. Or maybe i'll get lucky and someone next year or two will do a random Easter special screening.
