And yet it swept throught the BAFTAS (beating Ten Commandments, Seven Samurai!), is at 100% in both critics and users section of Rotten Tomatoes, A pretty high score on IMDb...

Oh God I care so little I almost passed out. Let me clear something up. I love Richard III. It's the most brilliant play I've ever read, and Olivier does a fantastic job with the role itself, however, they completely ruined the first act by chopping it up and moving it around and trimming it down so they could focus on the later, less interesting acts. McKellen's version may not have won all those awards, but he did do the character brilliantly and the script stayed closer to the play, and that's why it's the superior film.

I know, but this thread is asking the question of why did the Academy pass over it, not if it's any good.
And just because Loncraine's adheres to Shakespeare closer (which is a joke...look at the setting), it does not make it the better film. It simply makes it the more faithful. Completely un-related things.

I saw a DVD version. I don't know if it was criterion or not. But if there is a version where they leave the first act in tact, or at least make an attempt to do it a lot better. I'd probably enjoy the whole film a lot more. Maybe I'll look into that.

I really don't see why this movie would get Best Picture. Neither its narrative nor dialog were all that good. It glossed over too many substantial points.
