Madeira Island Whalermen thanks

in the movie initial credits it is visible a tribute to Madeira Island Whalermen.

Whale hunting was legal, and carried overhere into the 80s.

The movies depicts the voyage departing from NewBedford USA to the Azores Islands, still far away from Madeira, though Portuguese.

Why is Madeira mentioned?

The Madeira whalers do the actual whale killing in MOBY DICK. All the shots of whales being harpooned in the first hunt and the so-called "carnival" scene are these whalers. Shot from a distance or over-the-shoulder by cameraman, Freddie Francis, these seamen are cleverly intercut with close-ups of the actors in the movie.
