A question on Bikini...

It may seem like a silly question, but Ahab runs his finger on a sea map to follow the course of Moby Dick. If the name was coined for the atoll during the atom bomb testing, would it have been on a seafaring map of the time?

Which came first? The atomic bomb testing or the atoll? Bikini, the atoll, wins. The name was not coined for it during the testing--that is what it has been called in Western map making possibly from the time of Captain Cook.

The next question should be easier. Which came first? The atoll named Bikini or the introduction of the skimpy two-piece bathing suit? Clue: the atomic bomb testing came between the other two events.

The swimsuit was named for the island, not the other way around.

Exactly. And the main way people knew about the island was from the nuclear testing. Some French designer saw a photo of Bikini Atoll after the test there and got the idea for the swimsuit.
