With all the movies that have been remade (ones made not ten years after original),I am surprised a classic novel such as this hasn't been remade yet.

I thought it was, with Ted Levine in it. I'm not 100% sure bit I would think something like this would be done again...

Timur Berkmambetov (Wanted, Day Watch) is preparing a 300-like remake of this, coming up in 2011.
