I really love that song. It must have been great fun going to sea back in those days. Stubb and his men were such a gay lot and there was apparently a lot of comradeship among the crew.

I think the Sea Voyage has been romanticized by 19th century literature and certainly by 20th century film. Going to sea meant hard work, bad food, disease, exposure, stench (especially on a whaler), rather undesirable forms of discipline, the constant threat of boredom almost to the point of madness, and an almost complete lack of uh.....ya know.....female companionship.

That being said, I'm sure it had its finer points too. Else people would not have done it. Throughout our history, governments and even private enterprise have had to go to exorbitant lengths to compel men to serve at sea. Quite often by force and deception.
