Great in DVD...!!
I just received my copy in DVD...it's great!! First time I see it in the original CinemaScope. Much improved...the scene compositions are excellent, and can be appreciated fully for the first time! The stereo sound is fantastic as well! More later...after I watch it once or twice. One of the best movies of all time...(I think)!
Update (8-16): Just finished watching the entire film in DVD, including the narrated version with James Monaco. Beautifully done CinemaScope version can finally be appreciated; very well done, and great "1950's period piece". Makes you realize how much inflation we have had in the last 50 years, Tom Rath just wanted to make $10,000 a year! (Probably like $80,000 today, maybe?)
However, like many narrated versions that come too late (all the principles are either dead or too old), James Monaco doesn't seem very inspired, and makes a number of rather strange and/or irrelevant remarks (including some very unflattering remarks about a supposedly "gay character" Bill Ogden. Funny...that never occurred to me either when reading the book, or watching the movie previously! Strange remarks...!)
[I noticed the same problem with the narrated version of "North by Northwest". Ernest Lehman (the screenplay writer) talks about too many negative things in the movie...we don't want to hear about them! Why do you think we bought the film in the first place?!?!...)
Anyway...for all you fans of this movie "out there"...enjoy!!
Best regards,
Steve
